Sudda says "Balagena!"

This is an interesting thing really happened to my team last week. We had this British customer who came down to Sri Lanka for a discussion with us with relate to a project, which we are doing for him and for his other business activities.

The meeting went on for more than three hours and my colleagues used Sinhala to converse between team members at certain points as we thought the foreigner doesn’t understands the native tongue. We did this when we wanted to hide our slip-ups during the presentation.

At the end, as we understood that the fellow knows quite a lot about Sri Lanka and one of our guys asked the sudda, “hey do u understand Sinhala?” answer was “yes, balagena”

Luckily we didn’t blame him.

Hmm just want to make a point...Do you think its fair to use the native language within a group while in a meeting with foreigners?

i currently (quite unfortunately actually - you will understand why towards the end) am now working with a lot of indians. for the most part, these guys are ok - but they have some mannerisms that simply annoys the crap out of me. for example - when we get together they end up conversing in hindi knowing full well that i don' get most of it - apparently its my fault that i don't speak it. i once walked out of a emeting coz they ended up jabbering away and said 'let me know what you guys talk about'. fact remains its rude if you speak in a language when in a group that has at least one member who doesn't speak it. imagine how you would feel - and then wonder if you'd like it.
