New National Dress of Sri Lanka

By a chance I have seen some parts of the SAG 2006 opening ceremony on the television. And I became conscious that the Sri Lankan National dress code has changed and I guess it is espoused by Mahinda Chinthaka.

Almost all teams came out for the parade with their national costumes. Nepal and Burma teams were in their unique traditional dresses. The Ceylon team entered to the ground with the national dress + this all new ‘Chinthaka's sataka thing’.

You're mistaken.. That's not the "new national dress of Sri Lanka".

Apparently it's the national dress of Rajapaksepuraya.

I think it looks good. What the guy's wear in Sri Lanka is a total copy of what South Indians wear. The sataka gives it some uniqueness. At least the women have the unique Kandyan Sari.

And originally, the Satakaya was part of the national dress wasn't it? I mean if you look at the dress code for parliamentarians, if they choose to wear the national dress they must wear the sataka as well.

It's nice to be able to personalise such a bland dress. Have you seen Mahinda in his black national dress with the burgundy scarf. He looks fully sick.

National dress is bullshit concept ~ at least male national outfit. When you add a knot to the ‘Sataka’ it turns in to a Tie ~ may be that is how the tie started in the first place.

When one has to perform a ‘national’ appearance, traditional outfit can defiantly make nice statement ~ a fashion statement + political statement.

This maroon color ‘Sataka’ may will be a part of the national outfit, according to the legacy people who wear it today, leave behind tomorrow. Right now it seems more like ‘Rajapaksha’ Fashion school branding.
